From expert to beginner, there’s always more to learn and the same stands true for computers.

We’ve gathered 5 computer tricks that you can quickly learn today to make you more efficient and productive.

1. Keyboard Shortcuts

Keyboard shortcuts are combinations of keys pressed on your keyboard that tell your computer to do an action. Shortcuts differ by what computer you have (Mac or PC).

You might already know the shortcuts for copying (Ctrl C) and pasting (Ctrl V) but did you know that you can also reopen an internet tab that you accidentally closed by clicking (Ctrl-Shift T)?

If you’re using a Windows computer, holding the Windows key and pressing one of your arrow keys will send the window to one side of your screen (or one of your multiple monitors). This is great to know if you’re multitasking or if you need to see two windows at once.

These are just a few of the amazing keyboard shortcuts that can save you a great deal of time while working.

2. Password Protect Folders

By navigating to the “Properties” section of a folder and clicking “Advanced”, you’ll be able to select “Encrypt content to secure data”. Your Windows’ username and password will be automatically used so that only you have access to certain folders.

The process isn’t too complicated and using the built-in Windows software as opposed to downloading new software will save you computer space.

3. Screenshot Anything

Whether you’re watching a Youtube video or reading through an online article, you can screenshot your screen by pressing print screen “PrtScn” on most computers.

To access the screenshot, simply open a program like Paint, Word, or Google Docs and press “Ctrl V” to paste the screenshot. You can then save as a jpg or pdf.

4. Use Night Mode

You’ve probably seen advertisements for blue light glasses popping up, but did you know that you can filter the blue light by activating the night light. This changes the screen’s colors to a warmer tone so your eyes can rest.

Access it in Windows by clicking on the notifications section (bottom right-hand corner) and then clicking “Night light”.

5. Speed Up Your Computer

One great way to speed up your computer is to uninstall programs that you don’t use. Simply search for “Programs” in your computer’s search bar (not in a web browser) and click on “Add or Remove Programs”.

From there you can navigate through your programs and uninstall those that you no longer use.

You can also speed up your computer by defragmenting the disk. Simply search “disk defragment” and the program will pop up and walk you through the steps.
